Your Mounting Stress Factor

Sometimes the stress of having to quit, is more than you can even bear.  It seems like the world is against you, and you get really sad thinking about how much you have let your friends, family and most of all, yourself down by being a smoker.

This is not an uncommon train of thought.  Often, we do not communicate correctly to smokers.  We send you messages of health concerns, cost analysis and comparisons, and death scares.

The reality is, that the more you try and reason with this addiction, the worse you make it.  The image at the right is ridiculous, as it is not possible.  The only reason you die, is because we all are meant to eventually die.  And, no skeleton would ever smoke.

So, let's for one, stop the stress of the health scares, and the crazy propaganda that the tobacco companies and the government create.  They do not insist that you quit, they simply try the stress of scaring you into submission.  This will never get you into a non-smoking frame of mind.

The only way to quit, is to really want to make it happen.  When you are ready to live up to your own expectations in life, and become who you want to be, then you are ready to quit.  Do not quit smoking, just work on your mindset to get there, and stay calm.  It is going to be OK.  Once you make that decision, you are already there!  It just takes some patience, calm, and your willingness to be a new person.

Your Smoking Start

If you have started young as a smoker, chances are you smoked for 20 years or more before you realized that you really have made a mistake to start smoking.  It is usually very difficult for young minds to adopt the decision that a new way of thinking needs to be embraced before the practice of smoking ends.  The younger you start, the more you usually smoke, as the smoking brain is very much apart of your lifestyle, and your very identity.

You think how to manage a problem with cigarettes, how to work with them, play with them, and they become ingrained in your life.  You see them as much a part of you as water, food and sleep.  Until this fixed tool position is released, you  will forever be a smoker.

Realizing that your smoking began as a young person, and you really can not remember how you ever lived without them, takes time.  The transformation from smoker, to non-smoker, in this case, is a very long drawn out process.  How will you live without them?  There are so many instances where you use cigarettes, cigars or other tobacco as your crutch.  Your lifestyle move forward tool.

A journal for a few days, where you write down each and every instance of your smoking, the place, the time, and your emotional feelings at that moment, can be very enlightening.  It is a difficult process, as it forces you to document the many emotions that drive you to smoke.  When you have completed a few days, read your musings, and see if there is a correlation.  Maybe, take this journal through the weekend, to see what you do on your free time.  It will become a way to actually observe your smoking.

Tricks to Fool Your Smoking Brain

I hope you have decided to quit smoking, and have done it with full resolution.  There should be no doubt in your mind about this decision.  You need to be fully committed to the non-smoking lifestyle, and let your self understand that this is a good thing.  You are not missing anything by your quit!

Once you understand you are going to do this, your smoking brain is going to try to sit on your shoulder and whisper evil little doubts in your ear.  You will hear them once and awhile, and this is why, even when the physical demands of nicotine subs cede after two weeks, you still have stupid cravings once and awhile.  The cravings are not the nicotine talking, this is long gone from your brain.  It is your old way of thinking, and your smoking brain talking.

The best strategy for this, is to understand, if you may have a stressful moment, a confusion, or a panic even, that makes you really emotional, just stop and wait.  The moment will pass.  The moment is just that, a frozen bad present fragment of time.  Let it pass.  You will instantly, feel better.  When you are sick with cravings, it is because, you do not know how to logically deal with this new reality.  It takes some time to get used to, but if you do not go all dramatic on everyone, and take a deep breath, you will realize it really is now gone.

Logic rules in these situations.  If you are not handling your emotions clearly, take a walk.  Get some exercise, even if it is only for 5 minutes.  Do not let yourself down.  You can beat this crazy old way of thinking, you can deal with your evil smoking brain.  Let it know who is boss!
