Quit Smoking and Quit your Fear

Mental Challenges

Wow, such a circular chase smoking is!  I am always amazed at the facts that are given to the public, on how much this one addiction costs our people and our country.  It is a nasty health care obstacle, and can create a mountain of debt in terms of loss of quality lifestyle.

When I say this, I want you to start to open your mind to what smoking really is.  It is not a habit, it is more of an addictive circle of chasing the initial nicotine hit you get early in the morning with your first cigarette.  If you do not add to the nicotine that is stored in your body, you will be feeling some cravings and triggers to smoke more.  But, once the nicotine is gone, after 14 days, you are no longer going to need it.  True fact.

Many smokers are led to believe, and do believe, that the nicotine is the only thing that keeps them smoking.  It is more than that.  Your smoking beliefs, and constant busy thoughts to keep the nicotine in your body, creates a really addictive thought pattern, that is part of the addiction.  Without your true belief of quitting, you are not going to make it.  It is your key.  If you decide that you need to quit, but you are still needing to stick with your beliefs of your smoking lifestyle, you will not remain a non-smoker.

You need to want to quit, that is true.  It is true too, that you need to work on your thoughts as a smoker.  What you believe is true, may not be the truth.  Smoking may seem pleasurable to the smoking person.  It in fact, does not bring pleasure in the long run, but only a brief and short up at the start of the day.  During the first smoke, and the first puff.  If you think about this, and analyze this one thought, you should start the change that you need to have occur.

Mentally, you need to analyze the excuses and reasons why you smoke.  Do not let any one idea stop you.  The review will be very powerful, and create your new life ahead.

Power of Suggestion

If you are a smoker, you are victim to the power of suggestion.  Who would start smoking, without powerful cues from other people who sell cigarettes, and other smokers?  It is a culture, that was started in the early 20th century, and was created by a mission to sell the cigarettes they created.  In an attempt to glamorize the smoking culture, they employed the movie industry, and then television.  The wide reach of the subliminal visual clues, of watching Bette Davis smoke, and all of the other great stars, were very powerful.

Even in an attempt to keep their hands free of the dirt of smoking, they would use smoking wands, and long slender pipes to smoke with the cigarette further from their bodies.  And, as the marketing initiative grew, the very fact that there were new images and billboards, should have been easy to appreciate.

There are no good initial reasons why someone would inhale smoke into their lungs, as it is not a natural act.  A new smoker coughs, and sputters, and often gets sick to their stomach.  It does make you squint your eyes, and even smokers who have smoked for years, do the same thing.  They are used to the pain of the smoke in their eyes, but for two reasons, the addiction drives them on.

The truth is, you need some pushing to become nicotine addicted, and even more pushing to make your brain create reasons to stay a smoker.  Once these two items are merged, you are hooked.  It is a powerful combination of propaganda, and initiative from some very powerful growers and manufacturers.  Even people who had little reason to smoke, could be affected by the messages, the images, and the constant stream of "pleasure" that smoking provides.

Change Your Life with One Big Step

Quitting smoking is not going to end your happy days.  At the beginning, there is much fear that you will be enabling a new step that will not succeed, and you are sure it will be a trial for you.  It is not a process you want to begin, without full commitment and dedication.  It is not a step you want to take until you are convinced it is better than smoking.  Quitting before you are ready, and convinced it is the right thing to do, will be your best step to failure.

So, how do you know when you are ready?  You already are looking for ways to find your quit, and want to make it happen.  You do not want to continue your future life ahead, with a cigarette regret filled mind, and a constant control mindset from your smoking.  You are really having some good motivation, but you doubt you can do it.

Any time there is doubt, you are going to let that doubt grow.  And, it can become an excuse, a reason, and a bump back to smoking.  You do not want to quit until you have removed all doubts, and you are so really sure you can make this happen.

Your quit does involve nicotine addiction removal and process, but also, direct concerns about your mindset.  If you allow any glimmer of doubt to exist in your mind, you will find that crack of light could grow into a larger flood light of reasons to go back to a smoke.  Until you are complete in your mindset change, have worked through the excuses and the reasons, have torn down all the propaganda from your smoking brain, do not quit smoking.  Do, however, work on your quit.  Find the time to really analyze, tear apart your reasons for smoking, and objectively process why your smoking is really not all that you thought it was.

Until you tear apart your smoking mindset, you need to continue to smoke, receive your nicotine, like you always have, and then one day, with constant attention to why it is really not providing you any value, you will be ready.  You will know when the day comes.  It will be then OK, to flip that cigarette into the can forever.   Until then, smoke like a fiend, and let that nasty stuff be available to you as much as you want it.  Do not hold back.

And, when you finally realize, on your own, that you are losing nothing, nothing by not smoking, you will be successful at your new life ahead.

Your Mounting Stress Factor

Sometimes the stress of having to quit, is more than you can even bear.  It seems like the world is against you, and you get really sad thinking about how much you have let your friends, family and most of all, yourself down by being a smoker.

This is not an uncommon train of thought.  Often, we do not communicate correctly to smokers.  We send you messages of health concerns, cost analysis and comparisons, and death scares.

The reality is, that the more you try and reason with this addiction, the worse you make it.  The image at the right is ridiculous, as it is not possible.  The only reason you die, is because we all are meant to eventually die.  And, no skeleton would ever smoke.

So, let's for one, stop the stress of the health scares, and the crazy propaganda that the tobacco companies and the government create.  They do not insist that you quit, they simply try the stress of scaring you into submission.  This will never get you into a non-smoking frame of mind.

The only way to quit, is to really want to make it happen.  When you are ready to live up to your own expectations in life, and become who you want to be, then you are ready to quit.  Do not quit smoking, just work on your mindset to get there, and stay calm.  It is going to be OK.  Once you make that decision, you are already there!  It just takes some patience, calm, and your willingness to be a new person.

Your Smoking Start

If you have started young as a smoker, chances are you smoked for 20 years or more before you realized that you really have made a mistake to start smoking.  It is usually very difficult for young minds to adopt the decision that a new way of thinking needs to be embraced before the practice of smoking ends.  The younger you start, the more you usually smoke, as the smoking brain is very much apart of your lifestyle, and your very identity.

You think how to manage a problem with cigarettes, how to work with them, play with them, and they become ingrained in your life.  You see them as much a part of you as water, food and sleep.  Until this fixed tool position is released, you  will forever be a smoker.

Realizing that your smoking began as a young person, and you really can not remember how you ever lived without them, takes time.  The transformation from smoker, to non-smoker, in this case, is a very long drawn out process.  How will you live without them?  There are so many instances where you use cigarettes, cigars or other tobacco as your crutch.  Your lifestyle move forward tool.

A journal for a few days, where you write down each and every instance of your smoking, the place, the time, and your emotional feelings at that moment, can be very enlightening.  It is a difficult process, as it forces you to document the many emotions that drive you to smoke.  When you have completed a few days, read your musings, and see if there is a correlation.  Maybe, take this journal through the weekend, to see what you do on your free time.  It will become a way to actually observe your smoking.

Tricks to Fool Your Smoking Brain

I hope you have decided to quit smoking, and have done it with full resolution.  There should be no doubt in your mind about this decision.  You need to be fully committed to the non-smoking lifestyle, and let your self understand that this is a good thing.  You are not missing anything by your quit!

Once you understand you are going to do this, your smoking brain is going to try to sit on your shoulder and whisper evil little doubts in your ear.  You will hear them once and awhile, and this is why, even when the physical demands of nicotine subs cede after two weeks, you still have stupid cravings once and awhile.  The cravings are not the nicotine talking, this is long gone from your brain.  It is your old way of thinking, and your smoking brain talking.

The best strategy for this, is to understand, if you may have a stressful moment, a confusion, or a panic even, that makes you really emotional, just stop and wait.  The moment will pass.  The moment is just that, a frozen bad present fragment of time.  Let it pass.  You will instantly, feel better.  When you are sick with cravings, it is because, you do not know how to logically deal with this new reality.  It takes some time to get used to, but if you do not go all dramatic on everyone, and take a deep breath, you will realize it really is now gone.

Logic rules in these situations.  If you are not handling your emotions clearly, take a walk.  Get some exercise, even if it is only for 5 minutes.  Do not let yourself down.  You can beat this crazy old way of thinking, you can deal with your evil smoking brain.  Let it know who is boss!

The Key to The Quit

The reason the quit can be really difficult is the fact that you often are so conditioned to your smoking lifestyle, and it takes time to adjust to the new way of thinking.  Unfortunately, this can really hard, especially when the cravings hit during those early days.  Know that the cravings will end, and that they are not real after the 2 week spot.  The entire reason to smoke, and continue smoking has to be addressed.

Excuses and Reasons

There are so many smoking reasons, like, I do enjoy it.  What utter foolishness.  How could you enjoy a smoky cigarette or nicotine laden pipe when you are really only convinced that it tastes or smells good.  Truly, it is not that enjoyable, but just part of the propaganda machine of convincing you as a new smoker that you like it.  When you objectively handle these excuses, one at a time, you can see that you are really not that happy with your smoke.

There is No Magic Button

You can not expect miracles when you are considering a new lifestyle change.  It takes time.  It takes dedication, and it take devotion to your quit.  I can not emphasize this more to you, your quit is the most important decision you can make in your life.

Bigger than Jobs, Kids and Marriage

Yes, it is true.  Do not let this one fade into the past, embrace this moment, and decide today, that you are a non-smoker who smokes.  It is simple when you finally make the decision, but you have many hurdles to climb.  You have excuses, you think it is a good thing to smoke. It is is how you got into this situation in the first place.  Do not burden yourself with nicotine patches, gum or prescriptions.  That would only be a band-aid on a garish open wound.  Your quit needs to be dedicated, so you can get through the first two weeks of your life as a non-smoker who does not smoke.

You have everything to gain, nothing to lose by your quit.  Decide to do it today, and let me know when you have made the decision.  I am here routing for you!

Your People

If you are quitting, you will have to convince a few people you love, and know that this is actually going to happen.  There are so many things that we need to do to ensure that all of our people are hearing the message.  It really is unfair, as you are going through some tough adjustment times, and now you have to fight the mental change of your family and friends.  But, that is exactly what you need to do.  They need to be progressive in your life, and help you along.

Take time to Communicate

The more time you spend telling your story on why you are doing this, the better.  They are going to be suspicious, and doubtful, but you can get them on the same page as you very quickly.  Be resolved, and objective when they do not believe you.  They will test your strength, but you need to prove to them that you can quit.

Many times there are more smokers in one house, and if you are the first to quit, you will have to be the strongest one in the group.  Show them you care, and lead them along with you.  There is no reason to stay a smoker, when you have so much to gain.

Smoke Your Last Cigarette

If you have decided that this is the year you want to quit smoking, congratulations!  It is not an easy decision, and the most critical of all things is your decision to quit.  That is why many people start to quit, and then end up back as smokers once again.

But do not send these poor smokers off to pasture, they are only on a diversion, as they have made their decision, and they will enact it once again.  The quit and smoke pattern is very common, and here is how you end this vicious circle!

Decide to Quit For Good

It is not a flippant decision, and you need to really want to do this.  Then, ensure your quit sticks, by changing how you think about smoking.  You have built up reasons, excuses and patterns, that need to be destroyed.  No more excuses on your smoking habits.  Remove your cigarettes for good.  Destroy ashtrays, and toss lighters.  Enjoy the physical process of removing the effects of smoking, by having your car detailed.  Spend some money on a professional cleaning of your car.  Wow, was it dirty!

Change your Mindset

This is a new life.  It is not the old you, so any past regrets you may have, need to be destroyed.  Stop the process of ruining your life, by motivating yourself forward with great positive energy.  Sign up for a support group in town, try hypnotherapy, buy some quit smoking books to empower your lifestyle.  Tell all your friends you are quitting on such and such a date.  Be prepared for skepticism, as they have seen it all before.  But, if you stick with me, and find your support, your new positive way of thinking, and really motivate yourself to change, you can kick the last cigarette out of your mind.  In fact, there will come a day, where you actually do not crave a cigarette.  I promise it will happen!
